"Hacking Cell Death: Modulating MCL1 and BOK for Cancer Therapy"

Dr Mar Orzáez

Centro de Investigación Príncipe Felipe. Valencia, Spain

The host of this seminar is Laura Mondragón.

Mar Orzáez obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Valencia, where she specialized in membrane protein folding. After a decade of postdoctoral research focused on modulators of protein–protein interactions involved in apoptosis and inflammation, she has led the Targeted Therapies in Cancer and Inflammation laboratory at the Príncipe Felipe Research Centre (CIPF) since 2013. Her research centers on the therapeutic characterization of key regulators of cell death and immune responses, including Bcl‑2 family proteins, inflammasomes, and post‑mitochondrial apoptotic modulators. The group also integrates nanomedicine approaches to improve drug bioavailability while minimizing adverse effects. She has secured continuous competitive funding from national and European programs, including PROMETEO and HORIZON initiatives, and maintains a strong translational profile with seven international patents. Mar has authored over 80 peer‑reviewed publications and supervised nine completed PhD theses, with several doctoral projects currently ongoing. In addition to her research activities, she is an associate professor at the University of Valencia and actively participates in scientific outreach. She also holds positions of responsibility in national scientific societies and research networks related to molecular biology and drug discovery.
