Manel Esteller, Director of the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute, ICREA Researcher and Chairman of Genetics at the University of Barcelona has been recognized among the 500 most influential researchers in all areas of Science, from Biomedicine to Astrophysics through Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science or Materials Science.
This is stated in the latest edition of the Webometrics classification, prepared by the cybermetrics group of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC).
The ranking is based on the 240 million academic documents registered in the Google Scholar database, where information is collected from thousands of researchers from all countries and in all scientific areas. The ranking is based on the so-called “h-index”, one of the most used tools to determine the influence of a scientist's discoveries throughout his/her professional career. It was conceived by physicist Jorge Hirsch to bring together the quality and quality of a researcher's findings in a single value.
Dr Manel Esteller's research focuses on the regulation of genetic material, especially in the field of Epigenetics, and its relationship with the origin and development of diseases, particularly cancer. The discoveries made in his laboratory have managed, in addition to revealing the cellular bases of many pathologies, the implantation of new diagnostic biomarkers and novel therapies to reverse these diseases.
