Biography


Dr. José Tomás Navarro is leader of the Lymphoid neoplasms group at Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute and chief of the Department of Haematology-Laboratory of the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) at Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital. He holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from “Universitat de València” and is specialist in Haematology and Hemotherapy (1995). He earned his PhD from “Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona” (2004) and was postdoctoral researcher at Harvard Medical School (2007-2009) and visiting physician in the lymphoma program at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston (2009). He is author of over 140 publications in indexed journals and has been granted with 18 research projects, 8 as PI.

He is chair of the Spanish Group of Hematological Cytology (GECH), and member of GELTAMO (Spanish Group of Lymphomas), member of the EHA HIV-Lymphoma Network, of the Burkitt Lymphoma Network and of the International Castleman Disease Collaborative Network. He was Secretary of the Spanish Society of Haematology from 2018 to 2022. He is currently co-chair of the "Education Committee" of the European Hematology Association (EHA) and was chair of the "EHA Curriculum-Exam Committee" (2019-2025). He has been the director of the European Hematology Exam since its creation in 2015 until 2025 and was chair of the "European Hematology Curriculum" (4th version, 2023).

Dr. Navarro is an associate professor of the Department of Medicine at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He has been director of PhD doctoral theses, final degree and master degree projects. Moreover, he is involved in the training of Haematology-Haemotherapy residents of ICO-HUGTIP, as well as from other centres.

He has been devoted his entire career to the study of lymphomas, especially aggressive lymphomas associated with immunosuppression.
